girocard Kernel: Unlocking Germany's Most Trusted Payment Method

Germany has one of the most distinctive payment landscapes in Europe, and girocard sits at the very center of it. As the most widely used domestic payment system in the country, girocard is not just popular: it is deeply embedded in German consumer behavior and merchant infrastructure.

With nearly 100 million cards issued and over 8.3 billion transactions recorded in 2025, girocard continues to grow steadily, including in e-commerce, where domestic payment preferences remain strong.

What Is girocard?

Introduced in 2007 by the German Banking Industry Committee (GBIC), girocard replaced the older ec-card system and established a unified, secure standard for debit payments in Germany. It supports contact and contactless payments, as well as mobile payments through digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Today, 88.5% of all girocard transactions are contactless, a figure that reflects both the investment German banks and merchants have made in NFC-enabled infrastructure and the strong consumer demand for fast, frictionless checkout experiences.

The Role of the girocard Kernel

At the core of any girocard-compatible payment terminal is a certified kernel. This software component is responsible for managing the communication between the payment card and the terminal during a transaction. It ensures that the terminal correctly interprets card data, executes the proper authentication flows, and meets the functional and security requirements defined by GBIC.

To deploy a terminal that accepts girocard, providers must obtain kernel certification through a strict testing and approval process managed by the GBIC Approval Office. This process verifies that the kernel behaves correctly across all defined scenarios, from standard contact chip transactions to contactless and mobile payments.

Without a certified kernel, a terminal cannot legally or technically process girocard transactions. This makes kernel certification one of the most critical steps in entering the German payment acceptance market.

Why Merchants Choose girocard

girocard is valued by German merchants for several key reasons:

  • Low transaction costs: Interchange fees are typically lower than those of international schemes like Visa or Mastercard, making it attractive for high-volume retailers.
  • High consumer trust: German consumers are accustomed to girocard and actively prefer it for everyday purchases, particularly in grocery, retail, and food service.
  • Broad acceptance infrastructure: girocard is accepted at more than 1.3 million terminals across Germany, from large chains to local shops.
  • Strong data security: The system provides robust protection for cardholder data, aligned with both GBIC standards and European regulatory requirements.

girocard and the Rise of SoftPOS: AppPOS

To remain relevant in an evolving payments landscape, girocard has embraced innovation. One of its most significant recent initiatives is AppPOS, the girocard SoftPOS solution that enables merchants to accept payments directly on a standard Android smartphone, without the need for dedicated hardware.

This development opens the door for micro-merchants, market vendors, and service providers who previously could not justify the cost of a traditional payment terminal. With AppPOS, any business with a compatible smartphone can start accepting girocard payments quickly and at low cost.

The SoftPOS model is expected to accelerate girocard's reach in segments that have historically relied on cash, further reducing Germany's dependence on physical currency.
